TAPPAHANNOCK, Va. – VCU Health Tappahannock Hospital is pleased to introduce a new Family Medicine physician to its Tappahannock Family Medicine practice. Mary Gallagher, MD, is a Richmond native who graduated from VCU Medical School. She returns to the area following her residency and 6 years of practice at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, where – in addition to seeing patients as a primary care provider in clinic – she served as Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Iowa and the Family Medicine Department Vice Chair for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

“We are thrilled to have someone in Dr. Gallagher who knows the area and wants to be here; in addition to having valuable expertise providing rural healthcare,” explains Liz Martin, President of VCU Health Tappahannock Hospital.

Dr. Gallagher has spent most of her clinical time as a primary care clinician at UIHC’s Muscatine Family Medicine clinic, serving a primarily rural population. She has extensive experience providing comprehensive outpatient care, including prenatal care, hospice, and urgent care services. She has treated patients of every age, from children to seniors.

Dr. Gallagher’s relocation to Virginia was driven by a desire to be closer to family. She was looking to practice in a more rural community, but also wanted a healthcare setting with a large institutional affiliation. VCU Health Tappahannock was a perfect fit.

“My interests in Family Medicine are driven by a passion for working with diverse and underserved populations,” Dr. Gallagher adds. “And I also find the Tappahannock region a beautiful area.”

All VCU Health primary care offices are currently accepting new patients, including Dr. Gallagher at VCU Health Tappahannock Family Medicine. Patients can call 804-443-6063 to schedule an appointment with Dr. Gallagher.
