FREDERICKSBURG – Whether returning from a holiday trip, commuting to work, or running errands, drivers are urged to monitor local weather reports and adjust travel to avoid driving during two rounds of winter weather forecast for this weekend.

Rain is anticipated to fall Friday afternoon in the Fredericksburg area along the Interstate 95 corridor. Wet road surfaces may become slick overnight Friday into early Saturday when temperatures fall below freezing.

This weekend, snow is expected to fall and accumulate on roads in the Fredericksburg area, Northern Neck, and Middle Peninsula starting Sunday through Monday, creating the potential for hazardous travel conditions.

Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews are preparing for both periods of winter weather. Tomorrow, crews will be prepared to treat roads as needed for potential icing overnight Friday and early Saturday. Slick spots are most likely to occur first on elevated surfaces, such as bridges, ramps, and overpasses.

On Saturday, VDOT storm preparations will continue for snow starting on Sunday, including pretreatment of Interstate 95 and other primary roads districtwide. Travelers may encounter brief delays on I-95 and major routes while tanker trucks traveling around 35 mph apply a brine solution on the pavement.
