2023 VHSL Class 1 All State Baseball 2nd Team
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA — The Virginia High School League announces its 2023 Class 1 all-state baseball team. William Campbell senior shortstop and pitcher Tyler Mason is the Class 1 Player of the Year, and Lebanon head coach Cody Compton is the Class 1 Coach of the Year.
As the leadoff batter and a hard-throwing right-hander, Mason had an impressive season as both a shortstop and pitcher. He had a batting average of .463 and a .605 on-base percentage while scoring 27 runs and stealing 26 bases to lead William Campbell to the state quarterfinals. On the mound, the Ferrum College signee had a 10-4 record with a 1.14 ERA and struck out 121 batters. Mason finished his career with a .397 batting average, scoring 55 runs, stealing 57 bases, and two home runs as the Generals’ leadoff hitter. The ace on the pitching staff, Mason, had a 17-6 career pitching record, 240 strikeouts, and a career 1.85 ERA.
In his first season as head coach, Compton led the Pioneers to a 26-2 record and the program’s second state title with a 7-0 win over Auburn in the finals. During its postseason run, Lebanon outscored its opponents 88-5 while claiming the Hogoheegee District, Region 1D, and state championships. Lebanon’s only two losses of the season were to regional power Tennessee High with notable wins against Abingdon, the VHSL Class 3 state runners-up in 2021 and 2022.
The all-state baseball team consists of three pitchers, one catcher, four infielders by position, three outfielders, one DH, and two at-large players from any position. Only those players selected first-team all-region are eligible for selection to the all-state team. The all-state selection committee comprises eight coaches, with two from each region.
