More than 150 environmental activists rallied at Capitol Square’s Bell Tower on Monday to say Virginia’s clean energy goals are under attack and need to be defended.

Over 20 pieces of legislation filed during the General Assembly session aim to repeal or weaken the 5-year-old Virginia Clean Economy Act, said Connor Kish, director of the Sierra Club Virginia Chapter.

Gov. Glenn Youngkin has said the act is not working, arguing that Virginia needs to use all kinds of energy, including natural gas, a fossil fuel, to generate electricity because of the state’s soaring demand for power.
