Virginia budget negotiators are nearing a deal to ensure that the state will have a new two-year spending plan in place on July 1, but they haven’t completed work on how they would tax data centers to generate additional money to pay for state services.

Senate Finance Chair Louise Lucas, D-Portsmouth, and House Appropriations Chairman Luke Torian, D-Prince William, confirmed on Thursday that members of the budget conference committee have reached an agreement in principle on a budget, with less than two weeks before the current budget expires on June 30. Virginia has never entered a fiscal year on July 1 without a budget to run the government and pay for public services.
