The 2023 makeover of the General Assembly could result in major changes to what happens in state courts when Virginians head there to seek justice.

From opening state courts and class action suits to attacking insurer bad faith and giving tenants a break in district court, the new Democratic majorities are seeking to end some distinctively Virginia legal traditions.

The new approach to courts is also bringing a different approach to some criminal matters, from the ways courts levy and collect fines and fees, to new proposed rules for plea bargains and handling of evidence from police interrogation of juveniles to preliminary breath tests.
