ESSEX- At approximately 10:40 a.m. on Tuesday (April 9, 2024) the Virginia State Police responded to a two-vehicle crash on westbound Route 360 .2 of a mile west of Route 619 in Essex County that caused significant damage to the bridge that crosses Piscataway Creek. Two people were transported to the hospital.
A 2012 Dodge medical transport van was stopped in the road way for a tree that had fallen across both the east and westbound lanes of Route 360. A 2015 Freightliner tractor-trailer rear-ended the van, coming to rest in a jack knife position and causing significant damage to the bridge and the medical transport van.
The driver of the transport van, a 55 year old male from Henrico was taken by ambulance to the hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries. The passenger he was transporting to the McGuire Veterans Hospital, an adult male from Tappahannock, was flown by MedFlight with serious, life-threatening injuries.
Virginia State Police is currently working with Virginia Department of Transportation, Virginia Department of Emergency Management, and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality for the cleanup of the crash and to insure the integrity of the bridge.
