Virginia still faces a sizable teacher shortage this school year with more than 3,200 full-time equivalent vacancies, according to state data released in late December, a slight decrease from last year’s 3,600.

The teacher vacancy rate has decreased from 3.9% for the past two years to 3.4% this year.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Virginia’s teacher vacancy rate had hovered below 1% for years.
