Forty Virginians lost their lives 83 years ago in the surprise military strike on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, a moment that plunged the U.S. into World War II.

On Friday, their names were read aloud at the Virginia War Memorial in Richmond as part of an annual remembrance ceremony of that fateful day in which more than 2,400 Americans died and 1,000 were wounded.

The ceremony began at 11 a.m. and was held early due to expected road closures and traffic for the Dominion Energy Christmas Parade on Saturday.
