Gov. Glenn Youngkin is making the biggest sales pitch of his term, as he tries to convince wary legislators in the Democratic-controlled General Assembly that Virginia would be the big winner in a proposed $2 billion sports and entertainment project in Alexandria to lure two professional sports teams to make their home in the commonwealth — at the same time.
The Washington Wizards of the NBA and the Washington Capitals of the NHL would move to Virginia, currently with no major league sports franchise, bringing with them a combined 82 regular-season home games each year that would draw up to 20,000 people a game to a proposed arena at Potomac Yard that, with a new performing arts venue and public plaza, is expected host nearly 300 events each year.
