Chesterfield County police are investigating an incident near Ettrick where they said a 2-year-old child shot a man.
The man was flown to a hospital and is in critical condition.
Spokeswoman Liz Caroon said police believe the victim was preparing to leave a house in South Chesterfield. He placed his handgun on a nearby chair when the child picked it up and accidentally shot the man.
The child was not injured, and there was no one else present in the house at the time.
