Central Virginia may have been spared the worst of Hurricane Helene, but the state’s flagship health system based in Charlottesville is still feeling an impact after the storm snarled supply chains and cut off hospitals from the IV fluids necessary for many procedures.

As a result, the University of Virginia Health System canceled certain Tier 1, or nonurgent, surgeries scheduled for both Monday and Friday at UVa Medical Center in Charlottesville. Elective surgeries have also been rescheduled at UVa Health facilities in Culpeper, Haymarket and Manassas.

UVa Health said it is working to reduce any unnecessary waste of IV products, including IV fluids, dialysis fluids, parenteral nutrition and irrigation fluids.
