FREDERICKSBURG – Drivers should travel with caution this morning as the potential for icy road conditions continues from overnight refreeze of melted snow and ice in the Fredericksburg area, Northern Neck, and Middle Peninsula.
Interstate 95 is clear, and primary roads are clear across the 14-county Fredericksburg District, but isolated patches of ice are possible even in locations where bare pavement is visible. Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews are applying sand and salt as needed this morning to locations experiencing icing, with an emphasis on bridges, ramps and overpasses, which often freeze first before the surrounding road.
Persistently cold temperatures overnight have required crews to retreat roads for a risk of refreezing each morning since a winter storm on Sunday and Monday.
Drivers should reduce speed this morning and plan for extra travel time to avoid being rushed. Add following distance between vehicles to increase reaction time. Avoid sudden stops. Use additional caution on roads carrying light traffic, on hills and curves, and when driving on elevated structures, such as bridges.
Additional road conditions by region:
Northern Neck
- Primary roads are clear
- Secondary roads are in minor condition regionwide, with isolated patches of snow and ice
Middle Peninsula
- Primary roads are clear
- Secondary roads are clear in Gloucester, King and Queen, Mathews and Middlesex counties
- Secondary roads are in minor condition in Essex and King William counties, with isolated patches of snow and ice
VDOT crews are working in 24-hour emergency operations to make all state-maintained roads passable. Crews will continue to treat for icy road conditions across the road network for the refreezing risk overnight as needed, but with main routes now clear, VDOT has shifted resources toward plowing and treating subdivisions and low-volume secondary routes, which are routes numbered 600 and above.
Passable means the road has been plowed and treated, but bare pavement may not be visible, and the road is not plowed curb to curb.
In the Fredericksburg area, crews are responsible for plowing nearly 2,000 miles of secondary roads and subdivision streets in Caroline, Spotsylvania and Stafford counties. VDOT cannot provide a precise time that a plow will arrive on an individual street, but emergency operations will continue until all roads are passable.
