TAPPAHANNOCK, Va. The Tappahannock Artists’ Guild (TAG) is proud to present A Seat at the Table, a compelling exhibition featuring nationally acclaimed artists Zsudayka Nzinga and James Terrell. The exhibition opens with a free public reception on Friday, July 24, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at TAG (200 Prince Street) as part of Date Night in Tappahannock.
Visitors are invited to meet the artists, enjoy light refreshments, and experience an extraordinary collection of contemporary works that explore history, identity, family, spirituality, and the power of community through striking visual storytelling.
Husband-and-wife artists Zsudayka Nzinga and James Stephen Terrell have earned national and international recognition for their distinctive artistic voices and their commitment to arts education. Together they operate Terrell Arts DC, where they combine fine art, curatorial practice, and community engagement to expand access to the arts. Both artists have more than two decades of experience as educators and have exhibited their work in museums, galleries, and cultural institutions around the world. (TerrellArtsDCLLC2022)
Nzinga is an interdisciplinary artist whose richly layered collage paintings combine hand-dyed textiles, printmaking, painting, and mixed media to examine American history, labor, and the experiences of the African diaspora. Her work has been exhibited at institutions including The Phillips Collection, the National Liberty Museum, and the Prince George’s African American Museum, with permanent commissions in both public and private collections. Terrell’s expressive paintings invite viewers into spaces of contemplation and transformation. His vibrant compositions weave together color, movement, and spiritual symbolism, creating works that encourage reflection on our shared humanity and the connections that bind us together. Together, their work creates a powerful visual dialogue. A Seat at the Table explores themes of belonging, memory, resilience, and celebration, inviting viewers to consider who is welcomed, whose stories are told, and how art creates space for conversation and connection. “The work explores lived experiences and shared moments. The artwork centers on the devotion of family, friends, and a love of food and music,” says Terrell. “You are invited to come sit at the table and experience a renewal of life and a restoration of hope.”
The opening reception coincides with Date Night in Tappahannock, when downtown businesses, restaurants, and galleries remain open late, making it an ideal evening to enjoy dinner, explore the arts, and experience the vibrant creative community of Tappahannock.
