An alternative to the skill games legalization backed by one of the state’s most influential legislators and a coalition of convenience store operators got an initial hearing Tuesday, but its sponsor, state Sen. Jeremy McPike, D-Prince William, asked fellow senators to hold off acting until he made a few tweaks.

The Senate Gaming subcommittee did recommend Tuesday that the full committee pass proposals to allow betting on Virginia college sports and to let Petersburg hold a referendum on a proposed casino. But it is not recommending a measure to add Fairfax County to the list of casino hosts.
