Leslie Chambers Mehta, a Chesterfield County attorney, has formally jumped into the 1st District congressional race, giving Democrats a choice between at least two candidates to challenge Rep. Rob Wittman, R-1st, in November.
Mehta, 46, a civil rights attorney who works as chief of staff and counsel to the CEO of the Richmond Metropolitan Transportation Authority, declared her candidacy on Thursday for the Democratic congressional nomination. Her announcement, four months after she publicly confirmed an interest in the seat, sets up a primary fight with Herb Jones, 65, a retired U.S. Army colonel and former New Kent County treasurer who lost to Wittman two years ago. The primary is in June.
