Fall is deer-mating season, so the animals are more active and therefore, more likely to dart into the roadway, increasing the risk of a potentially deadly collision, according to a report from AAA.

There were over 6,100 such collisions last year in Virginia, killing four people and injuring more than 500 people, according to data compiled by the Department of Motor Vehicles.

More than half of those occurred during the final three months of the year.

AAA is encouraging drivers to stay focused and look out for deer, especially during the morning and evening hours when the distracted animals are most active.

AAA Mid-Atlantic in Virginia suggests that motorists may also want to adjust their insurance coverage because even a minor collision will likely be a major expense.”
