FREDERICKSBURG, Va.  – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will begin repair work on the Downing Bridge next week.

Route 360 over the Rappahannock River in the Tappahannock area will be reduced to one lane starting Tuesday, Jan. 9 for approximately six weeks.

Travelers can expect lane closures and brief delays on the Downing Bridge between Richmond County and the Town of Tappahannock between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. and 7 a.m.

Automated flagging devices will direct one-way, alternating traffic through the work zone.

Lane closures will not occur on weekends.

Emergency vehicles will always be permitted to pass.

Message boards will be posted at both bridge approaches to alert motorists to the potential delays.

Crews will repair the aluminum railing along the structure and make concrete repairs to the bridge deck as part of a maintenance project.

Weather permitting, work on the Downing Bridge is anticipated to be complete by March 2024.
