Norfolk, Va. — University of Lynchburg women’s indoor track & field freshman Hailey Smith earned all-state freshman of the year honors as voted on by the Virginia Sports Information Directors announced Thursday.

Smith competed at the NCAA championships in Birmingham, Ala. in mid-March and turned in the fastest 800m performance from any DIII freshman on the season. Her 2:13.07 was a personal best and was over three seconds faster than her first-place finish at the Old Dominion Athletic Conference indoor track & field championships in February. Smith was also named the freshman of the meet after Lynchburg won its third indoor trophy over the last four seasons.
