Following the unprecedented Hamas attack on Israel that killed hundreds of Jewish civilians, Virginia leaders in both parties expressed support for Israel and its right to defend its people.

Gov. Glenn Youngkin ordered that U.S. and Virginia flags be flown at half-staff on all state and local buildings and grounds “to honor the lives lost in the horrific terror attack committed against Israel and to hold those injured and held hostage in our thoughts.”

The governor ordered that the flags be lowered from Sunday until sunset on Saturday.

Over the weekend, Virginia leaders from Sens. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine to Youngkin condemned the Hamas attacks and underscored U.S. support for Israel.

Former Virginia House Speaker Eileen Filler-Corn, D-Fairfax, who was the first Jewish person to serve in the role, posted on X, formerly known as Twitter: “Still in shock and am contacting loved ones in Israel after devastating news of the murderous act by Hamas. These should be days of reflection & celebration on Shemini Atzeret & Simchat Torah. My heart is with all people in Israel and their right to self defense.”
