Sussex County, Va. – On the evening of July 20, 2025(Sunday), a Virginia State Trooper was stopped on the side of the road, with his emergency equipment activated, when he was struck by another vehicle. The crash occurred shortly after 9:00 p.m., on Route 460 (General Mahone Highway) at Route700 (George Town Road).
Preliminary investigation revealed that the troopers patrol vehicle was positioned on the small shoulder area and right lane of of Route 40, westbound, when the driver of a 2005 Cadillac SUV, traveling westbound, approached the patrol vehicle and made a sudden left turn, side swiping the patrol vehicle, then crossing over the west and eastbound lanes coming to rest on top of the train tracks. The driver, 40 year old Daniel Lee Jones of Main Street, Waverly, Virginia, was found to be intoxicated.
Jones was placed under arrest and charged with driving under the influence, refusal, and failure to yield right of way to emergency vehicle, and transported to Sussex County Jail. Neither the trooper nor Jones were injured in the crash.
