The father of a boy injured on an amusement ride at the State Fair of Virginia in Caroline County says his son has returned to school this week, but still has a long road to a full recovery.

It’s a lot for an 8-year-old to go through,” said Matt Nungent, 37, of Shenandoah County, whose son received a broken foot, a gash on his left leg that required surgical repair, abrasions and friction burns on his legs and back.

Nungent told the Richmond Times-Dispatch that his son boarded the ride, called “The Storm,” on Sept. 29 after meeting the height requirements listed for the attraction. The boy was by himself, Nungent said, and the father was watching him from the other side of the fence.

When it started up and (his cart) came around for the second time, his seat was empty,” Nungent said. “The little girl who was sitting across from him had a look on her face and her hand over her mouth. I knew something wasn’t right.”
