A bill to give state courts the power to punish smugglers seeking to evade U.S. immigration laws by taking people to or through Virginia died Friday on a party-line vote in a House panel after passing the state Senate on a bipartisan 33-7 vote.

The measure, sponsored by Sen. Glen Sturtevant, R-Chesterfield, would have created three new felony crimes for such cases.
