A sharply divided Virginia Supreme Court on Friday threw out a constitutional amendment that voters had just approved that allowed the General Assembly to redraw congressional maps this year to give Democrats a partisan advantage in 10 of the state’s 11 congressional districts.

Late Friday, the Democrats said they will file an emergency petition asking the U.S. Supreme Court to hear the issue. They filed a motion asking the Virginia Supreme Court to delay issuing its order nullifying the redistricting.
