The Virginia General Assembly that meets in January will look radically different. Seventeen of the 40 state senators and 34 of the 100 members of the House of Delegates are newly elected.

The new members will bring fresh perspectives and more diversity to the chambers, which will have 31 African American lawmakers, seven of them in the Senate.

The Senate, where Democrats will have a 21-19 edge, faces a substantial loss in institutional knowledge, but it’s worth noting that some of the newly elected lawmakers are making return engagements. Eleven of the newly elected senators previously served in the House or the Senate.

Meet the new state senators in the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
