Virginia lawmakers in both parties agree that they want to reduce gun violence, but they have diverged on how to do so. Democrats have favored prevention through such things as storage requirements or restrictions on purchases, while Republicans have typically favored stricter penalties for offenses.
A proposed ban on future purchases of assault-style firearms is among multiple proposed gun restrictions that are moving through the legislature now that Democrats control the House of Delegates as well as the state Senate. The House and Senate both backed bans on party-line votes, but Gov. Glenn Youngkin appears likely to veto the bills.
