Transportation Security Administration officials said Monday that the agency prevented a New Kent County man from boarding a plane with a gun at Richmond International Airport on Sunday.

The firearm, a .40-caliber handgun, was not loaded but was packed in a carry-on bag alongside two magazines loaded with 14 bullets, officials said. The weapon was detected by an X-ray machine at a TSA checkpoint, according to the agency.

The man was cited on a weapons charge and faces a “stiff civil penalty” of up to $15,000, officials said.
